BECOME A DOCENT
We are a dedicated group, primarily composed of retired individuals with a strong passion for history. We lead educational tours of our mission for both adult visitors and students.
Our volunteer docents play a vital role in preserving and sharing the rich history of the mission with visitors. Our dedicated docents engage with visiting scholars, lead guided tours, provide historical insights, and help educate the public about the mission's founding in 1772. The stories shared with our guests emphasize the people - including Native Americans - associated the mission as well as Mission San Luis Obispo’s role in California’s mission system and its cultural significance. Some of the docents also share a special expertise regarding the Mission’s art and architecture.
With a passion for history and community engagement, our docents ensure that each guest leaves with a deeper understanding of the mission's legacy and its ongoing importance in the region.
